Singapore, recognized officially as the Republic of Singapore, is a an island country and a city-state situated within maritime Southeast Asia. Positioned just over a single degree of latitude (equaling 137 kilometers or 85 miles) to the north of the equator, it resides off the southern coast of the Malay Peninsula. It shares borders with the Strait of Malacca to the west, the Singapore Strait to the south, the expansive South China Sea to the east, and the Straits of Johor to the north.
